The Purpose of the MedExPRO Skills Progression

Every Medical Exercise Professional (MedExPRO) begins with enthusiasm—but professional confidence comes from skills, systems, and repetition.

The 52 core MedExPRO skills define the technical, analytical, and communication foundation of our profession. These skills evolve through three tiers of competence:

  1. Essential Skills – Safety, screening, and foundational assessment
  2. Intermediate Skills – Integration, documentation, and program progression
  3. Advanced Skills – Case management, interdisciplinary communication, and outcomes tracking

  1. Essential Skills (Months 0–12): Building Competence and Confidence

At this level, the MedExPRO focuses on safety, assessment, and basic documentation—the building blocks of every effective medical exercise program.

⏱ Estimated Mastery: 6–12 months

During this stage, repetition under supervision is key.
MedExPROs should perform at least 50–75 MET assessments under guidance before transitioning to the intermediate stage.

  1. Intermediate Skills (Months 12–24): Developing Systems and Outcomes

Here, the MedExPRO shifts from managing sessions to managing client systems—combining multiple assessments, designing integrated exercise progressions, and reporting measurable results to healthcare professionals.

  3. Assessment Summary Report and Progress Report Writing
  4. Condition Anatomy and Pathology Understanding
  5. Musculoskeletal Screening & Job Site Analysis
  6. Client Medication and Cognitive Assessments
  7. Regional Functional Scale Selection and Integration
  8. Exercise Equipment Selection for Functional Goals
  9. Basic Documentation Systems (AMES Session Logs, POEs)
  10. Communication with Referring Providers (using templates from the MedExPRO Referral Ignition Kit)

⏱ Estimated Mastery: 12–24 months

To reach intermediate proficiency, MedExPROs should manage at least 30–40 clients with chronic or post-rehab conditions, using standardized outcome tracking and consistent communication with physicians or therapists.

III. Advanced Skills (Years 2–5): Professional Integration and Leadership

Advanced MedExPROs bridge healthcare and fitness at a professional level.
They can design outcome-based systems, coordinate with medical teams, and train staff or new specialists.
They don’t just deliver sessions—they manage functional outcomes and relationships.

  • Case coordination and documentation for reimbursement

  2. Application of PNF Techniques for neuromuscular re-education
  3. Cervical and Lumbar Spine Stability, Oswestry, and Functional Testing
  4. Integration of Functional Scales with Outcome Data
  5. Medical Referral and Collaboration Systems
  6. Advanced Communication and Documentation for Insurance and Reimbursement
